Within a few minutes' walk you can visit a private sandy beach (nice for quiet meditation, sunbathing, yoga, etc.), or walk down to Verna's Drive-In for breakfast or lunch. There is also a small food and sundry store behind Verna's Drive-In.
Just two miles down the coast is the famous clothing-optional Kehena Black Sand Beach where you can swim with the dolphins or just take in the sun and sights ... or enjoy a good book in the shade of one of the beach's mature trees.
A few more miles down the "Red Road" will bring you to gay owned and gay friendly Kalani Retreat Center where they have dance, yoga, hula, Hawaiian culture classes, swimming pool, sauna, hot tub, volleyball, and dining; the Millionaire's Warm Pond (a public hot-spring pool that mixes with ocean water at the oceanfront), and Kapoho Tidepools for an easy and awe-inspiring snorkeling trip.
Pahoa Village is just a 10-minute drive up Highway 130 and boasts several good restaurants, including two Thai restaurants, a Mexican restaurant, an Italian restaurant, and several others. Pahoa Village also offers eclectic shops, a gas station, post office, internet cafe, grocery and health-food stores, banks, a hardware store, pharmacy and more.
